Women's Futsal Kicks Into the Copa Against Their Growing Rival

After some delay, the 2016 MCAC Futsal Schedule has been released and once again, five women's teams will chase the coveted prize of the Copa de la Paz trophy.

The Blazers schedule begins with a opening weekend visit to Brandon, January 23rd and 24th where they will open up the 2016 campaign at Brandon University's Healthy Living Centre against the Bobcats. The Bobcats are not new to MCAC, but they are new to futsal. Now two seasons into a varsity soccer program, the Bobcats, like the Blazers, have seen a quick development in their teams over past two years and both look to be early Championship contenders.

When the two teams clash on January 23rd, it will not be the first time the teams have met on the futsal court. Brandon went all the way to the final in November at the Canadian Grasslands Cup, losing by a goal to Red River College in the final. On their road to the championship final, the Bobcats had just one blemish to their round-robin record and that was a 7-5 loss to CMU.

"We're hoping that we can build off the confidence that we gained in that win and go into Brandon and take another win when we open our season," said co-head coach Lianna Bestvater.

A new feature to the 2016 Copa de la Paz schedule is non-leg round-robin competitions; something that should allow MCAC college communities to connect in a better way with the sport. The Blazers will host 2015 Canadian Grasslands Champions and the 2015 MCAC Soccer Champions, Red River Rebels on February 2nd and late in the month, host their second non-leg match against USB Rouges before March 5th Championship Day that the Blazers hope they are able to play in for the first time in the four year history of the tournament.
