Men's Soccer Welcomes Sao Paolo's Samba Brothers Into 2016 Squad

CMU Men's Soccer is very pleased to announce the recent commitment of brothers Juliano Junior (left) and Jonathan Felipe de Souza (right) for the 2016 MCAC campaign. The Brazilians spent the 2015 college season at Kansas's Cloud County Community College where the T-Birds compete in the US NJCAA (National Junior College Athletics Association).

"I have seen video of both players and have emailed with their previous coach and I believe that they can both make an impact in our squad right away," said head coach Russell Willms, who will be entering his ninth season in September.

The primary development of the de Souza's has come in their native region of Sao Paulo. The brothers began competitive soccer with Sao Caetano Futebol Club from under 12 to under 16 before moving on to Guarani Futebol Clube in Campinas at the u16 and u18 level. Guarani's top team currently competes in Brazil's Serie C but is to date the only interior club to have won the Serie A National Championship, which happened in 1978.

"The de Souza's come from a very rich footballing background and I am excited to see the style of play and personality they they will bring to our team," added Willms. "Juliano (19) is a central attacking midfielder who has some flare in his play. He does well at finding pockets of space to receive the ball in and will be a talented attack-minded player who should combine well in our front four. Felipe (20) is a technically solid outside fullback who has good vision and is a good long distance passer."

The Blazers travel to Providence University College in Otterburne for their first conference match of the 2016 season on September 10th before returning to the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex to host the Red River Rebels the following day for their home opener on September 11th.
