Flawless Weekend Leads To Western Championship For Women's Volleyball

Women's Volleyball is flying high! Riding a four match winning streak in MCAC play, the Blazers entered the weekend's 2016 Western Canadian College Open Championship in Brandon with big expectations and came through, claiming gold in Sunday's Women's Final against conference rival, Red River Rebels in straight sets.

"It was such a good weekend!" said second-year head coach Evelyn Kampen, "it was the highest level our team has played this season so far and we just want to keep on riding this momentum."

CMU were undefeated through Saturday's round robin taking wins against Great Plains College (Swift Current, SK), ACC Cougars (Brandon, MB) Les Rouges de USB (St-Boniface, MB), SIAST Kelsey (Saskatoon, SK) and Red River College (Winnipeg, MB). Entering Sunday's playoff round as the top seeded team, the Blazers earned a bye into the tournament semifinal where they played a near perfect match against an improving ACC rotation to win 2-0 by scores of 25-13 and 25-22.

"Everything really came together for us on Sunday," explained Kampen, "we played a near flawless match against ACC. We just put everything away. We've never been better!"

CMU showed more of the same in Sunday evening's Women's Final, defeating Red River 2-0 to claim the program's third Western Canadian Championship and first since the back to back gold medals of 2010 (Olds, AB) and 2011 (Saskatoon, SK).

The Blazers are in their final conference match of 2016 tomorrow night when they host the MCAC's only undefeated team, the Providence Pilots at 7:00 pm. With a record of 7-2, and sitting just below the defending 2016 MCAC Champions in the standings, CMU hopes to pull off a huge win for the program and carry on their momentum into the second half of the conference schedule that begins January 8th at the University of Winnipeg.
