Joel Kliewer - November's Recovery Spot Athlete Of The Month

Congratulations to Joel Kliewer of Men's Volleyball on being selected the Recovery Spot Male Athlete of the Month for November. Joel led the Blazers to a record of five wins with only one defeat in six conference matches and put a cap on the month last weekend with a thrilling gold medal win in Brandon at the 2016 Western Canadian College Open Volleyball Championships, a 2-1 win over the Red River Rebels.

Two of Kliewer's biggest matches this month came on home court at the Loewen Athletic Centre; a pair of 3-1 wins over USB and Providence on November 11th and 19th respectively. Versus Les Rouges, the fourth-year outside hitter scored 16 kills on 29 attempts with only 5 errors for a hitting percentage of.379 and a kill percentage of 55.2%.

It was more of the same on November 19th when the Pilots visited the Loewen to battle CMU for first place. Kliewer pounded 15 kills in 29 attempts with only 4 errors. In both matches the Westgate Mennonite Collegiate product led his team in serve-receive rating with scores of 2.41 (vs. USB) and 2.34 (vs. Providence).

"Joel is a game player who bring it every game. His hitting efficiency and passing has been very good, likely the best of his career and certainly of my time with him," said head coach Don Dulder, "his leadership, enthusiasm and desire to win has been infectious with his teammates."

The win over Red River in the 2016 Western Canadian final was the icing on the cake for Kliewer. After breezing through the round-robin with an unblemished record, the Blazers took wins over the ACC Cougars and the Rebels to capture their second Western title, defending the first Western Championships that they won in November 2015 in Swift Current.
