89th Minute Penalty Sinks Blazers

Mario Giesbrecht scored the game’s only goal on an 89th minute penalty shot to clinch a opening day win for Providence University College over CMU.

More than 300 lively spectators were thoroughly entertained with the hard-fought match between the historic Manitoba rivals. The opening 20 minutes saw the Freemen create the majority of the offensive chances. Joel Janke, Norvin Campos and Giesbrecht showed their quality but were unable to find the target for the visitors. The referee’s halftime whistle ended a relatively uneventful first 45 minutes, with neither team getting much of a sniff at goal.

CMU continued to focus their attacking through the flanks in the second half but the tireless running of Simon Dueck and Aaron Saint-Cyr were unable to push the Blazers to a chance at goal. First-year defender Dale Danso proved his quality at the back for the Freemen with many well-timed tackles and with confident ball-winning.

As the clock approached full-time and it appeared that both teams would split the points, Giesbrecht’s run into the box forced CMU’s Adam Janzen to commit a costly foul that would send the third-year Providence forward to the spot. He calmly delivered the game-winning kick passed new Blazer keeper Blayne Stobbe to collect all three points.

“It was a difficult way for the game to end,” said CMU coach Russell Willms, “I thought that we deserved to pick up a point today. We need to keep our focus up for the full 90 minutes and we certainly need to work towards creating more chances to score.”

The next action for the Blazers is Saturday, September 17th when they host Universite de St-Boniface at the Waverley Soccer Complex at 7:00 PM.
