Too Little Too Late For CMU

A pair of early second-half goals was enough for Red River College to collect their historic first MCAC soccer win on Saturday afternoon over CMU by a final score of 2-1.

The teams exchanged chances in the first half, yet neither side was able to settle enough in the attacking-third to hit the target. The referee turned a blind-eye to CMU captain Chris Epp Tiessen early in the half when he appeared to be taken down at the penalty spot and play continued.

A strike-force that combined for five goals a week earlier appeared out of sync for the most part of the opening 45 minutes. Rebels central defenders Jim Matthewman and Brian Collins performed well to snuff out any CMU attacking chances.

With the winds at their backs, the Rebels struck early in the second half when Collins bent a well-taken free kick into the corner of the CMU goal, just out of Blayne Stobbe‘s reach. Red River would move ahead by two goals on 62 minutes when Tyler da Silva slotted it home on the counter-attack.

Fresh legs and frustration appeared to spark the visitors in the final 20 minutes of the match. Desmond O’Dell entered at half-time and proved himself with determined running on the wing. Moments from the referee’s final whistle, J. P. Hernandez spoiled a clean sheet performance by James Rosney, with a deft free-kick service that midfielder Sean Dyck directed into the back of the net.

“Certainly the quality wasn’t there from us today,” said CMU head coach Russell Willms, “It was easy to sense the frustration from the players when they all knew that they didn’t perform at their best. Red River came out well-organized and determined and deserved to win the game.”

The away weekend continues tomorrow afternoon, when CMU travels south to Otterburne for a week 1 rematch with Providence University College.
