Blazers Drop Providence Derby 2-0

The dynamic sibling duo of Andry and Mario Giesbrecht proved too much for CMU to handle on Sunday afternoon as the Blazers dropped their second match on the trot to fall to 1-3 on the season.

Fresh after returning from a leg injury, fourth-year striker Andry Giesbrecht lifted the home team into the lead on 16 minutes when he rocketed in the match’s first goal past Blayne Stobbe and the CMU defense. Moments later it was younger brother Mario who would try his luck from distance, only to have Stobbe dive to his left and hold the lead to one goal. In minute 24, Mario Giesbrecht would inflict his revenge, moving through the CMU defense and finishing with a goal that would put the Freemen up two.

Despite playing into the wind, the Blazers worked tirelessly to make a game of the first-half. On 37 minutes, Rodger Toews unleashed a screamer that likely would have found the goal had it not deflected of a teammate en route and run wide. Imran Uwimana was unable to direct an acrobatic side-volley past goalkeeper Eder Torres moments later and shortly after Toews powerful header rung off the crossbar and out of play.

With a 2-0 halftime lead and supported by a powerful north-bound wind, it appeared the match was sealed for the home team and it was. However, CMU substitutes Jon Willie, Desmond O’Dell and Matt Mayers truly proved their attacking value in the circumstances. Each showed strong running in the attack and commitment to get themselves on the ball. The half was capped by a sensational save by Stobbe in the 68th minute that came off of Andry Giesbrecht’s deadly left-foot. Stobbe dove to his left to parry the ball into touch around the post.

After back-to-back defeats, the Blazers will regroup for a non-conference weekend when they travel to Thunder Bay, Ontario for a Saturday match-up with Lakehead University and Sunday versus Confederation College.
