Blazers Blanked in Sportop Opener, 1-0

A lack of finish continued to plague CMU on Saturday afternoon at Chapples Stadium in Thunder Bay as the Blazers dropped their opening match of the Sportop Invitational 1-0 to Confederation College.

CMU held much of the possession in the opening minutes of the match and looked optimistic going forward. Midfielder Jonah Langelotz worked his dribbling magic into the box on minute 37, only to see his final touch drift wide of goal.

Despite having less time in possession, the ThunderHawks collected their own share of chances. On two occassions in the opening 45 minutes, goalkeeper Andreas Gerhard was forced to show his hand and each time the first-year from East St. Paul was up to the task.

The game’s only goal came on minute 82 off a Confederation free-kick that found it’s way past Gerhard from 25-yards out. It was the second free-kick award to the ThunderHawks in a 5-minute span, the first parried wide by the goalkeeper, was destined for corner of the goal.

“I was pleased with amount of possession that we had today but somewhat disappointed in our ability to create chances and finish when we work ourselves into the final-third”, commented CMU head coach Russell Willms.

With Friday’s opening match result, Lakehead University over Confederation 2-1, the Blazers find themselves with an opportunity for first-place tomorrow morning if the can capture a victory over the Thunderwolves of two-goals or better.
