Lack Of Finish Proves Costly For Blazers

Three second-half goals proved too high an obstacle to overcome on Wednesday night as the CMU men’s soccer team dropped all three critical points to the Red River Rebels, losing 3-1.

CMU looked the most likely to score in the opening 30 minutes of the match but were unable to put finish their chances. The greatest opportunity came on minute 20 when first-year midfielder Simon Dueck‘s attempt alluded Rebels goalkeeper James Rosney but bounced off the bar.

The Rebels began knocking on the door relentlessly in the first-half’s final minutes. Brian Collins launched several dangerous crosses into the CMU penalty area from free-kicks as well as from the corner-flag, but when the half-time whistle blew, neither team were able to post a goal.

A 30-yard rocket off the right foot of Red River captain Paul Bigras broke the back of the Blazers only moments into the restart. Bigras dribbled behind the CMU midfield and tried his luck from distance, blasting the Rebels into the lead past Blayne Stobbe.

Tyler daSilva was a thorn in the side of CMU back-four all night. On minute 52, the Rebel’s striker forced defender Jordon Zimmerly to commit a foul that would send Collins to the penalty spot where he calmly lifted the Rebels ahead by two goals.

The return of injured captain Chris Epp Tiessen seemed to spark CMU when he was inserted into the team moments after the goal. In minute 59, Rodger Toews free-kick from the edge of the area was spilled by Rosney and Zimmerly pounded the Blazers back into the match.

With all hands on deck searching for the tying-goal, daSilva broke clear of the few remaining CMU defenders to confirm the Rebels win on minute 86. The loss leaves the Blazers clinging to championship hopes that hinge on taking points from their final two matches – Saturday at undefeated University of Winnipeg, and Sunday at University of St-Boniface, who sit a single-point above the Blazers in the table.
