Blazers Edged By Mount Royal At Home

The CMU men’s basketball team dropped a 75-66 decision on Thursday night in Day 1 of their Holiday Inn Airport West Invitational tournament to Mount Royal University of Calgary.

Early foul trouble made it tough-going for the home team as fifth-year forward Nick Miller found himself ticketed three times in the opening quarter of action and helped the Cougars to a 24-12 first quarter lead.

First-year guard Matt Koenig was the benefactor of additional court time and the 5’9 product of Winnipeg’s River East Collegiate took full advantage. Koenig led the Blazers back into the game in the second quarter scoring 7 of his game-high 15 points before the half-time buzzer.

Balanced-scoring and persistent rebounding ultimately gave the CIS-bound Cougars the advantage in the second half. Shayne Stumpf and Awet Abraha led the way offensively for Mount Royal scoring 15-points a-piece, on way to the 9-point victory.

Second-year Blazers Wyatt Anders and Jacob Miller added 14 and 12 points respectively for CMU and were key factors as they brought their team back from a 13-point margin.

The next action for the Blazers is Saturday afternoon as they host a talent crew of CMU Alumni at 4 PM. CMU will start their MCAC regular season on Thursday, October 27 at the University of Winnipeg where they will tip-off with the College Wesmen at 8 PM.
