Blazers Hang Tough With Brandon Bobcats

The CMU women’s basketball team faced yet another daunting preseason challenge on Thursday night when they tipped-off with the Brandon University Bobcats of Canada-West of the CIS.

The Blazers began their preseason on September 29th at King’s University College in Edmonton, where they played three members of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Conference at the Dr. Robert Day Invitational. “Certainly there are things that we can learn from these challenges, and though they are tough games we know that they leave us significantly more prepared for our own conference season and the games that we will take part in here at home, ” says CMU head coach Christie Anne McCullough.

The competitive Blazers certainly ran with their West-Man opponents and held their own in transition. Second-year guard Hannah Prowse slashed for two-points early, drawing a foul and bringing the Blazers within two-points of a first-quarter lead.

Fourth-year forward Nina Schroeder was equally valuable on this night for CMU. The 5’10 forward scored a team-high 10-points and showed determination on the defense glass competing against the much taller Bobcat team.

With a margin of 30-points separating the two teams in the second half, second-year forward Kathleen McCullough (pictured) hit consecutive threes to raise confidence in the home team. Down the stretch, the Bobcats continued to show their quality and skill. Third-year forward Jaynell Gillett scored 16 of her game-high 33-points in the final half, cementing the win for the Bobcats.

The Blazers are back in action today against their MCAC rivals Red River College at 4 PM. They complete their Holiday Inn Airport-West schedule against X-Factor on Saturday evening at 6 PM.
