Improving Blazers Gear Up For Playoffs

The CMU women’s soccer team completed their final match of the season on Saturday afternoon, a 7-0 loss to the 2012 CIS-bound University of Winnipeg Wesmen. Despite the loss, the Blazers have plenty of reason to be optimistic.

“This is the best that we have played against the Wesmen and even though we didn’t win, the margin of defeat was the lowest that we have had against them.” said head coach Anika Southam.

The Blazers will enter the tournament ranked #3 with a record of 3-3 and will play #2 Providence University College in a women’s semi-final at 10 AM on Saturday morning. The Freemen also 3-3, assume the #2 seed based on goal-differential and hold a slight advantage over CMU, having defeated the Blazers in their last meeting.

CMU Captain Maraleigh Short finished second in the golden-boot race, ending the regular season with 7 goals. University of Winnipeg’s Sheri Hince closed out the season with a brace at home to Providence to take her second consecutive MCAC scoring title, with 8 goals scored.

All matches in the 2011 MCAC Soccer Championships will take place at Red River College’s Notre Dame Campus, October 22 and 23. Tickets are available at the game. For more information on the tournament and schedules, visit www.mcacathletics.ca
