Captain Kampen Leads The Way

Fifth-year power Evelyn Kampen led the way for CMU with 16 kills in a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-9, 25-23) over Universite de St-Boniface on Tuesday night in MCAC women’s volleyball action. The product of River East Collegiate added 2 service aces and chipped in defensively as well, picking up 4 digs and 1 solo stuff-block for her 3-0 Blazers.

The defending two-time conference MVP in women’s volleyball has jumped out to a strong start this season. Kampen recorded 9 kills in a three set win over defending MCAC champions Providence University College last week and her offensive number’s in the win over les Voyageurs look to make her a strong candidate to challenge for top-player honors again in 2012.

Of course, scoring is made easier with the help of quality service and fellow fifth-year Kathleen Vitt deserves much of the credit for Kampen’s early-season accomplishments. Chemistry between the outside-hitter and setter has been clearly evident since they first appeared in the starting rotation together in 2009.

First-year left-side Taylor Bain added 6 kills in the win while right-side Kelsey Dick provided 4 kills in support. The Blazers will look to make it 5-0 this weekend when they welcome the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen to the MCAC at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday and Sunday. Match times are scheduled at 6 PM.
