CMU Suffers Narrow Loss To College Wesmen

Shawn Franz and the CMU men’s volleyball team rebounded from a poor performance on Saturday evening, a straight-set loss to University of Winnipeg, with a hard-fought 3-1 loss on Sunday night, (19-25, 25-23, 24-26, 12-25). The 6’4 second-year right-side was an offensive monster for the Blazers in the match, posting 13 kills and pitching-in defensively with 6 digs.

Fourth-year middle Josh Krueger also seemed to regain his blocking-form that helped make the Blazers a top-defensive team last season. The native of Delta, BC posted 7 solo stuff-blocks over three sets in Saturday’s loss and came through offensively in the rubber-match with 8 points (5 kills & 3 stuff-blocks).

First-year setter Selanne Sangalang continued to impress his coach this weekend and is developing better chemistry with his hitters with each match. Third-year power Todd Reimer slammed 17 kills through the weekend series, with Sangalang making every effort to use full command of the CMU arsenal of attackers.

“Selanne had an outstanding weekend, as did our outside hitters”, said head coach Mark Kliewer after Sunday’s match, “We lost momentum tonight in the third set, but we really showed that we are coming together and battled hard for each other tonight.”

The next action for the Blazers is Wednesday evening when they host currently undefeated Universite de St-Boniface at 8 PM on home court.
