Back-to-Back Wins Over Defending Champs

Fresh off a 78-68 overtime thriller on Friday night, the Blazers made it two in a row on Saturday afternoon against the three-time defending MCAC Champions from Red River, edging the Rebels 66-65 in MCAC men’s basketball action. For CMU the win capped their fifth successive conference victory after starting the season 0-3 and now enter the Christmas break with a hold on first-place at 5-3.

The Blazers found success again through balanced scoring from their starting lineup. Second-year guard Jacob Miller led his team with 15 points, including a buzzer-beating three to end the first-half.

Behind Miller, first-year fowards Matej Juric and Sean Beargen added 13 points each.

Perhaps the story of the season’s first half is the adjustment of Blazer big-man Wyatt Anders. The 6’7 product of Sturgeon Heights who set a team record as a rookie, dropping 47 points and grabbing 22 rebounds versus Oak Hills, has found news ways of being productive despite facing constant double-teams from every opponent. Anders has been able to focus on finding open teammates from his post position, becoming more of a creator than a finisher in the CMU offense. Anders contributed 10 points versus the Rebels to go with 23 rebounds and 8 assists in the win. “Wyatt has worked hard on becoming a complete big-man this season,” says Blazers head coach Darcy Coss, “His name hasn’t always been on the top of the scoresheet this season, but our team is finding ways to put wins together, and Wyatt’s passing, rebounding and free-throw shooting is a big reason for that.”

Second-year Red River guard Anu Sidhu held the last shot for the Rebels with a chance to win, only to have his attempt rejected by Miller on what was ruled a clean block.

The next action for the Blazers is January 6-8 when they travel to Bemidji, Minnesota to compete in the NIAC/MCAC Cross-Over Tournament. The Blazer first-round opponents are Trinity Bible College.
