Blazers Serve-Up Important Home Wins

Winless through their first six conference matches this season, the CMU men’s volleyball team welcomed the Assiniboine Cougars to the Loewen Athletic Centre on Saturday afternoon for a December matinee, and picked up back to back victories (3-1 and 3-1) to move into fourth place in the standings, improving their record to 2-6.

After winning the first set 25-16, the Blazers saw the Cougars claw back to draw level with a second set victory 20-25. Trailing in the third 16-18, third-year power Todd Reimer rotated into service from the CMU side-out and confidently spin-served 8 successive points for the home team, helping the Blazers to the set and eventually the match (25-16, 20-25, 25-19, 25-12).

The Blazer captain finished the match with 9 kills and 4 service aces to go with 7 digs. Second-year left-side Shawn Franz scored 11 kills to lead CMU offensively, while right-side Rodger Toews pounded 5 kills in support.

The visitors jumped out in front in match two taking the first set 19-25, but the emerging Blazers held themselves together and fought back to take the match in four sets (19-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20).

Fourth-year middle Josh Krueger scored 12 kills and dropped 4 stuff-blocks for the home team while Reimer also scored a dozen in the match. Franz added 10 kills to accompany 8 digs in the victory.

The Blazers end the season’s first-half full of self-belief after a respectable fourth-place showing at the Western Canadian College Championships and now successive conference wins. CMU hope to continue their climb up the MCAC men’s volleyball standings when they return to Brandon on January 14th for a series rematch with the Cougars.
