Blazers Move to 10-0 With Wins Over ACC

Despite it being their final conference matches before the Christmas break, the undefeated CMU women’s volleyball team was not in a giving-mood on Saturday afternoon as they moved themselves to 10-0 with back-to-back match wins over the Assinboine Cougars – 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-13, 25-9) and 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-11).

The first match proved itself to be a dramatic affair as the 2010 second and third-place teams squared off. Though the visitors didn’t show themselves to be the aggressors in attack, Assinboine made the Blazers earn their points by keeping plays alive on defense. After tasting a narrow defeat through the first set, the Cougars caught CMU napping in the second, drawing level in the match.

The third set welcomed first-year outside hitters Taylor Bain and Laura Bernier into the CMU rotation and the shake-up seemed to quickly calm the storm. Blazer setter Kathleen Vitt combined with captain Evelyn Kampen, middles Breanne Giesbrecht and Kristen Coleman along with the two rookies to capture the third and fourth sets with relative easy.

Kampen led all scorers in the match and finished the two game series with 20 kills, 8 digs and 3 aces from the service line. Giesbrecht pounded 23 points for the Blazers, combining from 11 kills, 10 stuff blocks and 2 service aces. CMU libero Lindsay Braul added 11 digs to lead the defensively though two matches.

With MCAC women’s volleyball on hold until the new year, the Blazer women will begin preparations for their next major test – the Adidas Cup, hosted January 6-7 in Oshawa, Ontario. The tournament features the top CCAA teams from Ontario and CMU will look to improve on their 2011 third-place finish.
