Blazers Prepare For Adidas Cup Challenge

On the heels of winning their second consecutive Western Canadian College Championship, the CMU women’s volleyball team began preparations to take on the top eastern Canadian college teams at the Adidas Cup Challenge in January.

The 10-0 Blazers enter the tournament brimming with confidence and eager to show their pedigree in Oshawa. “This will definitely be our toughest tournament competition of the year”, said CMU fifth-year setter Kathleen Vitt, “Last year we were really impressed with their attacking, particularly the size of the middles that we faced.”

CMU lost in the semis of the 2010 Adidas Cup, dropping a semi-final match with Niagara College 3-1. The Blazers lost one of their top-scorers, Clare Schellenberg to a season-ending knee injury in their final round-robin match in 2010. Schellenberg’s absence put a scare in the Blazers and left them struggling for to find chemistry in their rotation for their semi-final match.

“We are really looking forward to avenging our loss to Niagara”, mentioned second-year power Maxine Delaney, “Last year we didn’t match-up with them at full-strength and we know that they are a team that we can beat.” The Blazers won’t have to wait long for their shot at redemption, as they are scheduled to play Niagara in pool play in their first tournament match on January 6th.

The tournament will also be a homecoming of sorts for third-year middle Breanne Giesbrecht who hails from nearby Virgil, Ontario. You can follow all the scores from Oshawa, January 6-7 live on the Blazers Facebook and Twitter pages.
