New Year Brings Great Result at Adidas Cup

The Adidas Cup assembles some of the top CCAA women’s volleyball teams in the country. Hosted in Oshawa, Ontario, 2012 was CMU’s second trip to the showcase tournament and like a year ago, the Blazers displayed to Ontario and the CCAA that they will compete on a national stage.

2011 ended in the semi-finals for the Blazers, capped by a disappointing playoff loss to Niagara College. In an epic round-robin rematch, CMU and the Knights served-up a match that was the highlight of the 2012 round-robin, with the Manitobans triumphing in straight-sets 32-30, 25-21.

Brimming with confidence, the Blazers went through the rest of their Pool B competition,  taking straight-set wins against Canadore, Sheridan and Loyalist and drawing with the host Durham Lords on way to the tournament semis.

Pool A featured two dominant CCAA programs. The #5 ranked Humber Hawks who breezed through their round-robin matches and #13 ranked Cambrian who finished in second-place to become CMU’s semi-final playoff opponent.

Trailing to Cambrian 2-0 in the best-of-five semi, the Blazers surged back winning the third and fourth set (25-16, 25-17) only to suffer a heart-breaking tiebreak loss 15-12 to be left out of the Cup Final for the second year in a row.

“It is hard to be disappointed with how we played,” said CMU head coach Andrea Charbonneau. “We played against some great teams. We won our pool and took four impressive wins… beat Niagara and then went to a tie-break with a nationally ranked team. It really shows the competitiveness of our team and the quality of the MCAC.”

Humber ended up defeating Cambrian in the Gold Medal match to capture their fourth-consecutive Adidas Cup. Fifth-year captain Evelyn Kampen was selected to the all-tournament team. The next action for the Blazers is Saturday when they travel to Brandon for a two-match series with the Assiniboine Cougars.
