Blazers Put Finishing Touches On A Perfect Season

The University of Winnipeg College Wesmen pushed the 19-0 CMU women to the limit on Saturday afternoon in the final MCAC regular season volleyball match of the season, but it was the veteran-laden Blazers that would eventually close-out their perfect season with the win 3:2 (25-16, 25-22, 22-25, 21-25, 15-3).

The CMU women ran a similar course in 2011, when the only blemish on an undefeated season came in a late-season loss to the eventual MCAC Champions Providence last February.

The home victory was a perfect appetizer for fifth-year Blazers Kathleen Vitt and Evelyn Kampen who completed the final season of their volleyball careers with a perfect conference record of 20-0. Kampen led her team with 24 kills in the five-set match with Vitt drawing assists on a vast majority of the River East collegiate graduate’s attacks.

CMU was able to ice the match in the fifth-set, drawing on a pair of veteran middles Breanne Giesbrecht from the front-row and Kristen Coleman from the service-line to take complete control in the tie-break. Giesbrecht finished the match with 16 kills and 6 stuff-blocks while Coleman scored on 6 service aces.

The final test for the Blazers will come in two weeks time in Otterburne, Manitoba where the defending champions Providence University College will host the 2012 MCAC Volleyball Championships. CMU will be pitted against the #4 ranked University of Winnipeg College Wesmen, a team that showed themselves a dangerous first-round opponent for the Blazers.
