CMU Seeks Championship Redemption

The road to redemption begins tomorrow afternoon for the CMU women’s volleyball team at the 2012 MCAC Championships in Otterburne, Manitoba.

The Blazers entered last year’s tournaments as the heavy favourites to take home the gold medal with a conference record of 15-1. Yet is was the streaking Providence Freemen who shattered the hearts of CMU in five-sets thriller to claim the title.

Spurred-on by their 2011 disappointment, the Blazers have dominated all MCAC competitors this season and represented Manitoba admirably in non-conference tournaments winning Gold at the Western Canadian College Championships in Alberta last November and earning a semi-final berth at the Adidas Cup in Ontario in January.

With a perfect season already under their belt, the Blazers take confidence into their conference semi-final date tomorrow against the #4 ranked University of Winnipeg at Providence University College. Despite falling victim to the Blazers earlier this month, the College Wesmen have shown themselves to be an improving side and a team that could cause problems for CMU. The 2012 newcomers pushed the Blazers to four and five sets in their February weekend series and have some powerful young attackers that coach Andrea Charbonneau-Harrison and her squad cannot take lightly.

The tournament gets underway tomorrow afternoon with the CMU women in action at 2 pm. The tournament final is scheduled for 6 pm on Saturday evening. Tickets are available at the gate for $5.
