Familiar Face Moves Into Coaching Role

The new coach of the CMU women’s basketball team will be right at home in the Loewen Athletic Centre. The Blazers announced Thursday that they will welcome back former team and conference Most Valuable Player, Janelle Hume as the team’s new head coach.

“We are thrilled to have Janelle back with us,” said Director of Athletics Russell Willms, “she is right at home at CMU and very familiar with our women’s basketball program and our conference. She is really a natural fit.”

After graduating from CMU, Hume completed an education degree at the University of Winnipeg and has since taught overseas in Thailand and more recently in the St. James School Division. As a Blazer-athlete, Hume’s merits were recognized with numerous award, most notably in 2007 when she received the prestigious David Terry Award in the ACCA (Association of Christian College Athletics) for excellence in athletics, academics and Christian service and in 2009 when she was selected Female Athlete of the Year.

As an assistant coach at Vincent Massey Collegiate, Hume helped the Trojans to the 2010 AAAA Provincial Finals and to a victory last winter in the AAAA Consolation Final. Hume has also lent her expertise to the Manitoba provincial basketball program, assisting in provincial team evaluation camps.

“It is a great advantage for us to have another aspiring young coaches in our program,” added Willms, “Janelle has so much passion and energy for basketball. As a young coach and still very much an elite-athlete herself, her coaching insights are very tangible for university-age players.”

Hume and the Blazers will open their 2012 schedule on home court when they help host the 3rd annual Holiday Inn Airport-West Invitational, October 11-13.
