Westgate Tandem Jump Into CMU Roster

The CMU men’s volleyball team is pleased to announce the commitments of Thomas Friesen and Josh Zaharia for the upcoming season. The two Wings helped elevate their high school Westgate Mennonite Collegiate to prominence in their Grade 12 year, finishing the season undefeated in their zone and eventually finishing in second-place at the ‘AAA’ Provincial Championships last November in Brandon.

Friesen, a 5’9 setter received an honorable mention in his final high school season and was acknowledged with the Player’s Choice Award at the provincial championships. “Thomas plays with plenty of heart and emotion,” said CMU head coach Mark Kliewer, “He has excellent vision on the court and will help us a lot defensively.”

Zaharia, a 6’3 right side received recognition in 2011 with a  ‘AAA’ Graduating All-Star selection. “Josh is a solid blocker and big hitter,” commented Kliewer, “in high school he was very difficult to play against and I think he will grow into an excellent player at the MCAC level.”

The Blazers recently confirmed plans to begin their away preseason matches in Toronto at Seneca College, competing in the Seneca Cup Challenge, October 12th and 13th.

“Thomas and Josh will be important players for us as we go forward with a bit of a youth movement,” says Kliewer, who saw a number of key players in his rotation graduate last spring. ” I am looking forward to working with this young team that will be full of energy.”
