Blazers Kick-off Season With Home Draw

Rianna Isaak‘s free-kick goal brought CMU level in the 68th minute to earn the Blazers a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon against the Red River Rebels.

The visitors went up a goal early in the first half when Stephanie Morrison pushed the ball past Kelsey Reimer on 16 minutes, giving the Rebels the lead. However it was the home team that managed to carry the lion-share of possession despite the challenge of playing into a 50 kilometer head-wind.

The Blazers relied heavily on the tenacity of their four defenders. Third-years Isaak and Silvie Kroeker and newcomers Breanna Heinrichs and Sasha Michalchuk helped lock down the area in front of goal, allowing possession to turn and their teammates to transition.

The point was the first for new head coach Tony Mazza who worked diligently with the team to strengthen their ability to pass and defend – skills that the Blazers showed-off to their home crowd of approximately 200.

The next action for the CMU women is Wednesday, October 19th when they travel the short distance to the Sturgeon Heights Community Centre to kick-off with the new-look U of Winnipeg College Wesmen. The perennial MCAC women’s powerhouse since 2010 has found a new home in Canada-West this season, allowing a second-tier team to form under the “College-Wesmen” title.
