Blazers Find Victory in Preseason Match

After a hard-fought opening set, the CMU men’s volleyball team found their footing against Assinibione Community College on Friday night on home court as part of the 1st Annual Rebels Invitational. What will the season bring for the young Blazers? On this night, they put together a 3-1 victory, by scores of 24-26, 25-16, 25-17, 25-17.

The match started as a definite nail-biter with points going back and forth. There was tension on the faces of the home supporters as CMU traded serves and spikes with the Cougars, eventually fall 26-24. Then the Blazers found their “A-game” and defeated ACC the next three sets.

CMU head coach Mark Kliewer commented, “The game really turned around for us in the second set when Josh Zaharia went in for us and served for seven-consecutive points.” Zaharia, a 6-2 outside-hitter from Westgate Mennonite Collegiate is is one of nine first-years that make up a roster that is truly green.

Another first-year who made an immediate impact for CMU was middle-blocker Keiran Enns. Despite being a new recruit, the 6’6 middle blocker from Mennonite Collegiate in Gretna displayed poise and confidence beyond his years, owning the court as he brought the Blazers to victory.

High-flying left side, Shawn Franz was also someone to look out for, as his serves and kills were something to be admired. The 6’3 third-year racked up an impressive 15 kills over four sets, as the Cougars struggled to keep the ball off the floor.

The next action for the Blazers is October 11th when they travel to Toronto to participate in the Seneca Cup Challenge in Markham to complete their preseason schedule. CMU will first participate in a tune-up against Conestoga College in Mississauga before taking on a larger contingent of OCAA competition on the 12th and 13th.
