Blazers Kick-Off Airport West Invitational

The CMU women’s basketball team took to the court on Thursday afternoon playing host to the Brandon University Bobcats in the first game of the Holiday-Inn Airport West Invitational. This was the first action of the year for the Blazers and it showed as the Bobcats pulled out to an early lead.

The Bobcats early surge was thanks in part to the great play of third-year forward from Brandon, Aimee Johnston (#10). In the first quarter she managed to score 8 points, eventually collecting a 15 point game total, to give the Bobcats the lead after one quarter. The Bobcats carried the momentum into the second half with the end of the second quarter resulting in a 54-23 lead.

The Blazers battled hard in the second half but it was a tall order against a towering Brandon University team. Blazer newcomer, Samantha Curtis (#15), a 5’10 first year guard from the Linden Christian Wings in Winnipeg, tried to turn the tide with a steal and 5 points in the third, including one from beyond the arc. But with the sound of the buzzer to end the third, it was Bobcats 71, Blazers 30. Despite the driving attack of the Bobcats into the fourth quarter, the Blazers refused to back down in their defensive efforts, fighting hard right to the final whistle.

This was the first game of the year for the women’s team and even though the Blazers came up short losing 87-34, Curtis (#15) said she was happy with the way the team looked and is looking forward to the rest of the tournament. The next action for the women’s team takes place on Friday, October 12 at 4 pm against the Saskatchewan prairie, Briercrest College Clippers.
