Blazers Bitten by Medicine Hat Rattlers

The CMU Blazers men’s basketball team faced the Medicine Hat Rattlers Friday evening at the Airport-West Invitational Tournament. The Medicine Hat Rattlers didn’t wait to strike, sinking their first two points in the opening 30 seconds off of the opening jumpball. In a hard fought first half between the Blazers and Rattlers, Alberta doubled up on CMU by a score of 40-21.

CMU provided a glimpse of a possible comeback after the half-time break when Matt Koenig (4) manufactured a breakaway to open the second half. Matt Koenig (#4) was impressive. This second-year point guard from River East Collegiate in Winnipeg continued to bring success to the team as he racked up 11 points in the third quarter. According to coach Darcy Coss, “He’s one of our leaders. A good athlete who can really play.”

Unfortunately Matt’s solid play was not enough to pull CMU ahead of the competition. The Rattlers led 55-39 at the end of the third quarter and walked off the court with a 76-52 victory. Top playmakers on either side of the ball were Medicine Hat Rattler, Will Beard (#15), who sank 16 points and collected 6 rebounds for his team, and Matej Juric (#7), a 6’5 forward of the Blazers who scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

The CMU Blazers held their own throughout this Airport-West Invitational game but dropped to 0-2 on the tournament. Coach Darcy Coss commented in a post-game interview that the tournament is a great opportunity to play out of the MCAC conference against higher competition.
