Early Goal Ends Season For Blazers

It was a cold and windy day on the pitch as CMU opened up the Championship Tournament against the Red River College Rebels in the women’s semi-final.

The game started fast and it didn’t take long for the Rebels to capitalize on an early scoring chance. Katrina Clark, a 5’4 first-year Red River midfielder found a way to put one past Sasha Michalchuk who was keeping the goal for the Blazers. The rest of the half saw the Rebels control a lot of the action with the wind at their backs but they could not find a way to get by the CMU defense again. Rianna Isaak (#14), a 5’11 third-year defender, played a pivotal role in keeping the Rebels away from the goal. As the first half expired, the Blazers were down 1-0. In the second half it was a different game for the Blazers.

Powered by a gusty-wind they managed to keep the pressure on the Rebels throughout the course of the half. Deanna Zantingh (#4), a 5’10 third-year midfielder for the Blazers, had a great game as she quarterbacked the offence the whole way. Time and time again the Blazers would create offense off the rush but just ultimately could not manufacture the touch needed to draw level.

With time running down the Blazers threw everything they could at the Rebels but the Red River defense stood tall to end, advancing to the women’s final on a 1-0 scoreline.

Four members of the team were selected to the 2012 All-Conference Team, midfielders Maraleigh Short and Heidi Epp and defenders Brianna Heinrichs and Rianna Isaak.
