Blazers Begin With Promising Win

On the very first conference game to be served up this year, the CMU women’s volleyball team showed great promise for the season ahead with a home court victory over the Red River Rebels. They captured the night with a hard-won 3-2 victory in five intense sets (25-17) (16-25) (25-27) (27-25) (16-6).

The first two sets saw the Blazers and Rebels exchange crushing wins to set the stage for a high-energy final three sets. After the narrowest of defeats in the third (25-27), the Blazers rebounded to take the fourth and fifth sets.

For returning left-side player, Maxine Delaney, this early season victory was a boost of confidence: “Red River came on really strong, and it’s awesome for us to build our momentum into the next game.” Fifth-year rightside hitter and Saskatchewan powerhouse, Kelsey Dick, made a striking impression on the evening with some incredible kills and saves from all corners of the court, keeping the balance of power in green hands.

Head coach, Andrea Harrison, spoke about next steps, “We’re a young team, we have a good mix of returning players and new players … it’s all about learning to be comfortable with each other.”

This victory sets the season in motion with an optimistic and hopeful 1-0 record, but can the Blazers keep the rally going in their favor? We’ll find out very soon, as they take on the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen at home for their second conference match on October 26th at 6 pm. November 1st at 6pm they will face the University of  Saint-Boniface at home.
