Blazers Cut Down Jacks On Home Court

IMG_4620First-year forward Stephen Jones grabbed 16 boards and dropped 10 points on 5-for-12 shooting to lead his CMU Blazers to a 60-57 home court win on Friday night against the Dakota College at Bottineau LumberJacks of the National Junior Colleges Conference of the USA.

The exhibition series between the two schools has been running for almost a decade – CMU crossing into North Dakota each November to play in Bottineau and Dakota College returning to Winnipeg in late January. The win was the third for the Blazers who came from behind in the fourth quarter, outscoring the ‘Jacks 20-12 to steal the game in the final minutes.

Matt Koenig shot 50% from the field and led the victors with 15 points, including a 5-for-7 night from beyond the 3-point line.

IMG_4601The ‘Jacks rebounded with a 68-67 win on Saturday afternoon, a game that ended with a rather controversial decision. With 1.6 remaining on the game clock and Bottineau in-bounding the basketball, CMU guard Lucas Derksen intercepted the pass and appeared to be fouled while trying to connect on a game-winning three-point attempt. Derksen would finish with 15 points for the Blazers, who were led offensively by second-year forward Matej Juric who dropped 20 on 8-for-16 shooting.

The Blazers welcome the Winnipeg College Wesmen to the Loewen on Friday night as they return to their conference schedule. The CMU women tip-off with the Wesmen at 6 PM followed by the men at 8 PM.
