Blazers Go Out With A Winning Bang!

IMG_4973It was a famous home win on Wednesday night for the CMU women’s volleyball team, coming from behind to defeat the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-9) in their final home match of the 2012-13 season.

Ahead in the second set 15-7 and full of confidence, former Blazer Stacey Malech, now setting for the opponent, served her College Wesmen into the lead on a 11-point run and silencing a resilient home crowd of close to 250 spectators who had gathered for Fan-Appreciation Night. The visitors would end up leveling the match and taking the momentum of the game into a third-set win.

IMG_4925Maxine Delaney and the Blazers really applyed their “A” game in a pressure-filled fourth set. The third-year left side came up big for CMU, as the primary option for setter Heidi Epp, and she didn’t disappoint. From the service line, Delaney recorded 5 services aces on the match, 13 kills and supported on defensive with 2 stuff blocks.

For the second consecutive match, Clare Schellenberg featured, this time late in the first set to serve the Blazers to a 1-0 lead, and remained in back-row for her passing prowess. The 6’2 left-side has been sidelined with knee injuries for the better part of two seasons and he presence in uniform and now back on the court, is a tremendous boost for her teammates.

Now winners of 3 of their last 5 matches, the CMU women will close out their regular season on Sunday evening at the Duckworth Centre in a rubber-match with the College Wesmen. First-serve is scheduled for 5:30 followed by the men’s match at 7 pm.
