Championship Dreams Dashed By Long-Ball

IMG_5528Mike Villaneuva held a hot-hand for the College Wesmen shooting 7-of-9 from beyond the arc to lead the University of Winnipeg past CMU in Friday night’s 2013 MCAC Men’s Basketball Championship at the Duckworth Centre by a score of 69-50.

39 points came off the long-ball for the home team, which was clearly the focus of the College Wesmen offensive plan. For Blazers’ three-point threat, Matej Juric, the shots wouldn’t drop, managing a mere 3 points on 1-for-8 shooting from the field. First-year guard Lucas Derksen did power CMU back into the game in the second-quarter, hitting for 12 points while 2013 All-Conference selection Stephen Jones posted 14 points to go with 8 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

IMG_5518The Blazers trailed by only 2 points midway through the second quarter, but saw momentum swing back to the home team in the final minutes to trail at the half 22-29. Villaneuva came to life in the third, displaying his all-conference shooting form and pacing Winnipeg to 22 points in the quarter. The sharp-shooting continued into the final quarter as the College Wesmen guard put the game out of reach.

With the semi-final win the home team punched their ticket to Saturday’s MCAC Championship showdown with the top-ranked Red River Rebels who cruised into the final with a 97-37 win over Providence earlier in the day.
