Futsal Rivalry Renewed Friday Night

408275_560585613971547_1541948004_nSitting atop the standings after two legs of the 2013 Copa de la Paz (Peace Cup), the CMU men’s futsal team is cautiously optimistic as they enter the final leg of the tournament this weekend at Red River College. In six matches, the Blazers find themselves with 4 wins, 1 loss and a draw, good for 13 points and a 2-point lead over second-place University of St-Boniface in the four team pool.

“We have been satisfied with the results that we have gotten thus far,” says CMU head coach Russell Willms, “but there is still plenty of room for improvement. I know that our best futsal is still ahead.” Despite being above Les Rouges in the table, CMU has yet to defeat St-Boniface – the team responsible for both blemishes on the Blazers record.

312466_560585990638176_769613836_nEarly in February, CMU and USB battled to a thrilling tie – clearly the spectacle of the tournament’s second stage held in St-Boniface. The game saw both team hold leads over the course of the match and 4 goals scored over the game’s final e minutes. Since, the Blazers traveled to Regina to compete an 8 a-side tournament and played well despite missing the playoff-round, highlighted by a competitive 4-3 loss to former Senior Men’s National Champions Winnipeg Lucania. “We have improved a great deal individually and as a team,” says Willms, “the players are genuinely playing for each other and their enjoyment of the game shines through their play.”

A fortnight since Regina and a month removed from the second leg of the Copa, the Blazers are itching to get back on the futsal court and are scheduled to kick-off Friday night against les Rouges at 9 PM at Red River College’s Notre Dame Campus. A showcase of the competitive-level of Manitoba College Futsal, the winner of the match will likely punch their ticket to holding top-seed in Cup Championship Weekend scheduled to take place at Providence University College in Otterburne later this month.

Other round-robin action for the Blazers this weekend will take place on Saturday at 10am and 3pm when CMU plays the Red River Rebels and Providence Freemen respectively.
