Blazers Volleyball Adds Westgate Duo

Anya Snider (right, below) and Krista Aitken (left, below) will certainly not be playing together for the first time when they take the court for the CMU women’s volleyball team this season. The two friends are graduating from Westgate Mennonite Collegiate this month and recently made commitments to join the Blazers.

IMG_6626Snider and Aitken helped Westgate progress to the Championship Final of the 2012 MHSAA “AAA” Girls Provincials last November in Lorette, along with fellow-Blazer recruit Katie Enns. All three Wings were honored with Graduating All-Star recognitions for their outstanding performances in their Grade 12-year.

Snider, Aitken and Enns were also teammates off the volleyball court, combining together on the ultimate field and basketball court while at Westgate. On top of that, Snider and Aitken will be in action with the Provincial Ultimate team this summer and are looking forward to The National Championships in BC’s Lower Mainland this August.

“Anya’s ball control and defensive abilities will certainly contribute to the strength of our backcourt,” says first-year head coach Joe Moore, “she brings a level of maturity and leadership that will prove to be valuable to our program and it’s development.”

IMG_6632A tribute to her athleticism, Snider represented Canada at the 2012 World Ultimate Championships in Ireland last summer and has been a member of Team Manitoba since 2007.

“Krista brings a valued skill-set to our line up as well,” says Moore of 5’10 Aitken, “As a left-handed athlete with the ability to set, she will provide our team with a number of offensive options. I look forward to seeing her develop within the program.”

The Westgate trio will kick-off their 2013 non-conference schedule in Edmonton, October 11-13 with round-robin matches against MacEwan University, Olds College, Lakeland College and NAIT. The team will also be hosting their first-annual Manitoba High School Junior Varsity Girls Tournament at CMU, October 4-5.
