Men’s Soccer Rolls Past Les Rouges

IMG_8450The biggest surprise in Week 3 of the 2013 MCAC Season was undoubtedly CMU’s 7-2 away win on Sunday afternoon against University of St-Boniface at Whittier Park. After the Blazers struggled to find cohesiveness on Saturday afternoon, holding on for a 2-1 victory against the Red River Rebels, they laced their scoring boots versus Les Rouges and exploded for six first-half goals to cruise to claim a massive win.

First-year striker Ben Wride (left) continued to show his finishing touch, scoring his 5th of the season in the 11th minute to open the scoring. Wride scored his conference-leading 6th on 18 minutes converting on a crossing pass from second-year winger Cole Johnson (below) who provided the pass that created four of the seven CMU goals.

When Alex Klassen was chopped down in the penalty area in the 25th minute, the floodgates opened for midfielder Andrew Letkeman, who opened his 2013 MCAC scoring account from the penalty spot and would score three more goals before being substituted off in the 65th minute.

IMG_8468Captain, Simon Dueck scored the final Blazers goal on Johnson’s fourth assist of the match mid-way through the second half, but the challenge on the cross, forced Johnson off for the final 20 minutes.

The win lifts CMU to 3-0-1 on the season – their lone loss coming at home against Providence on September 7th. The two historic rivals will meet in Otterburne, October 5th in a match that will hold major weight in the overall conference standings.

“We are all pleased with the win and the outpouring of goals that accompanied it,” said CMU head coach Russell Willms, “We can take plenty of confidence from this game, as we shook up quite a few things before the match, and the response from the players was very positive.”

The Blazers travel to Thunder Bay on Friday to compete in the 2013 SportTop Invitational against Lakehead University, Confederation College and Thunder Bay Senior Men’s Champions, Rainbow Realty.
