Tipping-Off The Season In Support of Cancer Research
The Men's Basketball team is looking forward to taking their first steps on the preseason court this weekend when they tip-off Friday evening at the Ballin' For Cancer Awareness Tournament, taking place at the University of Winnipeg's Duckworth Centre.
The eight-team event is being coordinated by former Brandon Bobcat player and assistant coach, Donovan Gayle, who himself was diagnosed with lukemia at the age of 16. All proceeds from the event will go directly to Cancer Care Manitoba.
"It means alot for us to be invited to participate in a tournament like this one," said Director of Athletics, Russell Willms, "It is a great opportunity for our student-athletes to get connected through sport to support a great cause."
Second-year guard Kyle Booy (pictured) is expected to be a valuable leader on the young CMU team this year, and is looking forward to being part of a tournament that involves more than competition, "As a team we are honoured to be one of the two universities playing in this tournament," said Booy, "It is awesome that the officials are refereeing for free and that doing something that we love, like playing basketball, can raise funds for Cancer Research."
The schedule has the Blazers matched-up on Friday evening at 5:30pm with the Winnipeg Wesmen; an experienced CIS team with high expectations for success in Canada-West this season. "Honestly, I feel pretty nervous about Friday's game, but I think it will be alot of fun and a great learning experience for our young team," said Booy of their first-round opponents, "It will be good to start the season off with a really tough game so we can let our nerves out and and feel good about how we played, without worrying about the final score."
