Milestone Win for Men's Soccer Over Providence

It's been over six years since CMU defeated Providence in Men's Soccer: 12 regular season matches, three playoff matches (including two championship finals) and one preseason friendly have left current CMU Head Coach Russell Willms with a combined record of 0-16 versus the team he co-coached, assistant coached and played for.

That shutout finally came to an end on Saturday afternoon when Ben Wride and Cole Johnson each scored and an set up a goal in a landmark 3-0 away win to begin Week 2 of the season.

Wride opened the scoring for CMU in the 17th minute, when he volleyed home Johnson's cross from 20 yards out past Providence goalkeeper Josue Dubon to make the score 1-0. Two minutes before halftime, Wride's cross found the head of an unmarked Jonah Langelotz in front of goal and the fourth-year captain nodded the Blazers ahead by two goals.

Johnson scored CMU's final goal midway through the second forty-five minutes, when his nimble feet created space to shoot from 20 yards out and the third-year winger pounded the third Blazer goal into the top-right corner of the net.

The thrilling win moved CMU to 1-0-1 on the season, but the adulation was short lived when on Sunday the Blazers found themselves on the opposite end of a milestone win for the Assinoboine Cougars. The second-year Brandon program captured their first conference victory in Week 2 of 2014, holding on to a 3-2 win over CMU at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.

The next action for the Blazers is Saturday afternoon at home when CMU host the Brandon Bobcats at noon (women) and 2pm (men).
