Blazers Hoops Are Bound For Alberta Showcase

Fresh off a convincing home preseason win against the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen on Friday night, the CMU Women's Basketball team is taking their show on the road this weekend to compete in the 2014 Alberta Basketball College and University Showcase Tournament at Edmonton's Saville Sports & Recreation Centre.

The young team showed their dominance at the Fall Festival event, taking the game 80-39. The team was led in scoring by first-year center Shannon Boyd, who dropped 17 points in her debut. "It was great to get a game under our belt before we head out on the road," said the Miles Macdonell Collegiate grad, "we are coming together as a group and are looking forward to test ourselves against the competition in Alberta."

Fellow rookie Tiara Licsi (pictured in action from Friday), who was recently featured in a Winnipeg Free Press article for her scholarship selection from the Manitoba Foundation For Sport, is excited to showcase her new team and MCAC basketball in Edmonton this weekend. "We are looking forward to representing our province and conference," said the Sisler High School grad, "we just need to play our game and worry about ourselves and we should end up coming out with scores we can feel good about."

Boyd, Licsi and the Blazers begin their preseason tourament action on Thursday evening when they tip-off with the Briercrest College Clippers at 6pm. Friday's game will see CMU take on the Red Deer College Queens at 3:45pm and Saturday has the Blazers in action at 10am versus the Ambrose University College Lions from Calgary, who will be a new team to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference in basketball in 2014-15.

The CMU men are also taking to the Saville Centre court against some of Alberta's best college programs. Last Friday night, the Blazers lost a heartbreaker to the Briercrest Clippers, 92-87 after leading over three quarters. CMU faces the Keyano Huskies (Thursday, 6:00pm), Ambrose Lions (Friday, 2:00pm) and Concordia Thunder (Saturday, 12:00pm).

The teams next home action in Saturday, October 18th when the Blazers host the Turtle Mountain Mighty Mikinocks of the Northern Independent Athletic Conference (NIAC), from Belcourt, North Dakota at 2pm and 4pm.
