First Serve: Young Blazers Step Onto The Court In Preseason

A new coach and a roster that will consist of more than half a team of first-year players, the CMU Women's Volleyball team will quite literally be facing their first challenges in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference tonight when they take to the court at Providence University College in preseason tournament action.

The group has been working hard to gel together. "This weekend provides an opportunity to test ourselves against our conference as we endeavour to find the right lineup combinations and witness a few positional battles for the upcoming season," said rookie head coach Eku Malcolm.

CMU will take on the host Pilots at 5pm to begin tonight's matches and stay on court to face the defending MCAC Champions, The University of Winnipeg College Wesmen at 6:30pm. On Saturday, CMU continues the round-robin with matches against Red River College at 11:30am and the Assinboine Cougars at 1pm.

The tournament will help the Blazers as they prepare to head east to Oakville later this month to represent Manitoba in the Wannamaker Invitational, just outside Toronto, where CMU will take the court against Durham College (London, ON), Fleming College (Cobourg, ON), Mohawk College (Hamilton, ON) and Conestoga College (Kitchener, ON) in pool play before crossing over for playoffs.

"I believe that the preseason will help us build the chemistry we need, along with an understanding of our systems, to allow us to challenge for the top spot in the MCAC," added Malcolm, "Our team is built to get us into the top four for the MCAC Championship tournament and we hope to close the season out with a Championship win."

The CMU Men's Volleyball Team gets their preseason started next weekend at Red River College in an invitational against the host Rebels, Keyano College (Fort McMurray, AB) and Lakehead University (Thunder Bay, ON) in pool-play.
