Men's Basketball Has Chance To Rebound In Weekend Classic
The Blazers outscored their opponents 41-37 through three quarters in Saturday night's home opener at the Loewen Athletic Centre, but lost their shooting confidence and the game in the final 10 minutes when they were blasted 28-12 in the fourth quarter by the University of Winnipeg to eventually fall 65-53 to the College Wesmen in MCAC Men's Basketball.
First-year point guard Artem Coste held a hot hand for the Blazers, helping build the lead on 7 of 11 shooting for 15 points and 5 rebounds.
"There were times when we were on and off on Saturday," said the first-year guard, "but overall we did pretty good on the defensive end of the court. We are a really talented team, so we really need to focus on our game this weekend and play CMU ball."
Friday night, the Blazers make a quick trip to Otterburne for an MCAC date with the Providence Pilots before embarking Saturday morning on a charter to Bottineau, North Dakota to play in the annual Kevin Thom Classic. The Blazers played some of their best basketball of the season against Dakota College at Bottineau, highlighted by a thriller in the Loewen last January that saw the visiting US Junior College hold on to a narrow victory.
The men will face Dakota College on Saturday night at 8pm and wake up Sunday morning to tip-off with the Northland Technical College LumberJacks at 2pm.
The CMU women plan to keep their modest winning streak rolling this weekend after a convincing 73-36 win over the College Wesmen on Saturday. The Blazers take on Dakota College on Saturday at 6pm and the Bottineau Alumni on Saturday at noon.
