Kliewer Leads CMU Charge Against First-Place Rebels

With two straight-set wins over the Providence Pilots and USB Rouges last week the CMU Men's Volleyball Team enters this weekend with an opportunity to gain ground on first-place Red River who sit atop the conference standings with a 6-0 record.

The Blazers were led by their second-year captain, Joel Kliewer who had a stellar week recording a kill efficiency of 54% for 18 kills in six sets played. The 6'4 power was also a force from the service line where he pounded 13 aces to see CMU's record improve to 2-1 on the young season.

"Joel leads by example and has a very advanced understanding of the game," said first-year head coach Don Dulder, "he is a tremendous captain and leader who is very coachable and extremely supportive of his teammates."

Tomorrow night, the Blazers will host the first-place Rebels with plans to rebound from the three-set loss they suffered in their season opener to their Route 90 neighbours on October 25th. On Saturday, CMU travels to Brandon to face the ACC Cougars who find themselves near the bottom of the standings with a 0-2 record; both losses coming last weekend to Red River.

The CMU Women are also in action on the weekend in three matches that are suddenly very important to their playoff hopes. Though only three matches into the season, CMU find themselves on the outside looking up at the five opponents they are chasing in the six team conference. The Rebels currently sit fifth, with a record of 1-5 and ACC are next in fourth at 2

The action in the Loewen Athletic Centre begins tomorrow night with first serve at 6pm for the women's match and 8pm for the men's.
