Leadership And Passion To Play Define Recent Men's Soccer Signing

The Men's Soccer Team is excited to announce the commitment of former Mennonite Collegiate Institute team captain Sam Schellenberg for the 2015-16 season.

"In the past, we have had a lot of success in our team with rural players from both Manitoba and Saskatchewan who have thrived from having the opportunity to play and train regularly with other competitive players," said head coach Russell Willms, "I think Sam is going to do very well here and his passion to play and improve is very evident."

The 5'7 left-footed winger began playing in the Manitoba Major Soccer League for a few matches last summer and has continued that commitment through the MMSL's indoor season, playing at the top level with Division One side Brittania VMC. Schellenberg makes the 130 kilometre trek into Winnipeg on a regular basis every Wednesday and often on weekends to train.

"I think that Sam will develop quickly into a player who can help us on the left side of the field as a winger or fullback," added Willms, "he has good athleticism and quickness, a high work rate and has a personality that should fit well into the group."

Schellenberg was captain of his MHSAA Rural Zone 4 high school team in his grade 11 season but was injured for half his grade 12 season with the Blues. He also competed in volleyball and track for MCI and played as a goaltender on the Altona Maroons hockey team.
