Former Women’s Volleyball Star Returns Home to Coach Blazers

CMU Athletics is very pleased to announce the appointment of Evelyn Kampen as the new head coach of the Women's Volleyball Program. The three time Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Most Valuable Player is excited to have the opportunity to return to her university roots and her first taste of head coaching in the MCAC with her former team.

"I had such a great experience as a player at CMU that this is really a thrill for me," said Kampen, "I learned a lot while playing there and had such an amazing CMU coach and teammates."

After graduating from River East Collegiate, Kampen moved west to join the Trinity Western Spartans for her first two years of university volleyball. She returned to Winnipeg in 2009 where she transferred to CMU and led the Blazers to a record of thirty-five victories with only one defeat in her first two regular seasons, including consecutive Western Canadian College Championships in 2010 and 2011. Kampen was named CMU Female Athlete of the Year in 2011 and 2012.

Upon graduation, Kampen followed her dream of playing professionally to Germany where she signed with TV Eiche Horn for the 2012-13 season. in 2013, she brought her outside attacking to the Danish Elite Club, Lyngby Volley in 2013 where she spend a year and a half before suffering a shoulder injury that brought her home last January. While at Lyngby, Kampen ranked in the top-8 hitters in the Danish league during the 2013-14 season.

Kampen has gained valuable coaching experience in Denmark where she worked as the head coach of the Lyngby Volley 14u girls and has local club coaching experience in Winnipeg with the Junior Bisons and Mavericks at the 14u and 17u levels. Kampen has also coached for several years at the Blazers Summer Sports Camps that are scheduled again this August.

"Certainly it is an exciting day when you have a chance to see such a prolific alumni return home with a passion to give back to the program that she played in," said Athletic Director, Russell Willms, "We know Evelyn's abilities as a player and coach very well and this a great opportunity for her and for the talented players that will play under her leadership."

The Blazers are currently committed to two preseason tournaments, the first coming in early October at Providence University College and the second coming in mid-October in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Their conference season gets under way October 24th when the Blazers travel to St-Boniface to take on Les Rouges.
