Instant Impact Expected On The Pitch From Local Academy Product

The CMU Women's Soccer Team is very pleased to announce the commitment of Garden City Collegiate's Cheryl Malamion for the 2015 season. Malamion has been training locally with CSSE (Chico's School of Soccer Excellence) where she has developed excellence in her technical skill and tactical abilities and has had many opportunities to travel through sport.

"We are very excited to have Cheryl joining us this season," commented co-head coach Lianna Bestvater, "she reads the game very well. She recognizes open space quickly and makes smart passes."

Malamion traveled with CSSE to Iceland in 2011 and to Spain in 2012. Her academy has also competed regularly at the National Sport Centre (NSC) Christmas Classic in Minneapolis where they have taken second place at the U14, U16 and U17 levels.

The 5'3 midfielder has captained her high school team since 2013. That year, as a Grade 10 player, Malamion led the Gophers to the KPAC and MHSAA Provincial Girls Urban Championship.

"Cheryl is very technically skilled and she plays the game with a lot of passion", added co-head coach Cara Isaak, "She makes very smart movements and passes. We're excited to have the opportunity to work with her."

Malamion played her first senior women's game in June with her Academy's graduates CSSE Chicas who compete in the Winnipeg Women's Soccer League Second Division. The seventeen year old helped her team to their first win of the season and scored her first senior women's goal in the process.

Malamion and the Blazers will begin their 2015 preseason September 6th against a yet to be named opponent at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex to prepare them for their first conference match of the season September 12th when they host the Brandon Bobcats.
