Men's Volleyball Hopes To Take The Sting Out Of Toronto
Men's Volleyball flew into Toronto yesterday one day after the Blue Jays advanced to the American League Championship Series and hope to pick up some of the emotion that still lingers in the city as they take on the Sting Challenge at Seneca College this weekend.
Fresh off exhibition matches in Edmonton at the start of the month and a third-place finish at the Red River Invitational last weekend, the Blazers are hopeful that they can continue to grow in their performance this weekend as they take on some of the top teams in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA).
"We expect many of the Ontario teams to be a similar level as the Alberta teams that we played early in the month, which means the competition will be high," explained third-year setter Jason Friesen, who earned his first All-Conference selection last season.
CMU went 0-3 in competitions against the King's Eagles (played twice) and Concordia Thunder during their Alberta preseason road trip, but for the Blazers, it was their first matches of the new year and was all part of building and growing as a group and finding what system will make this group the most successful.
"From what I have heard, Niagara has a good team, so we're looking forward to playing them," added Friesen, "Niagara has a few players from Manitoba that some of us have played against before, which will really get us pumped up to play our best."
Friesen and the Blazers won't have to wait long for that meeting with the Niagara Knights. The two teams begin tournament play against each other this afternoon at 1 pm (Eastern Time). Later today CMU plays the Sheridan Bruins at 5 pm.
On Saturday, CMU challenges the Durham Lords at 8 am and wraps up their pool play at 2 pm against the Mohawk Mountaineers. To view any or all of the matches, visit www.senecasting/tournaments/stingchallenge15.html
