Six Games Into the Season And Women's Basketball Remains Perfect

Women's Basketball faced some tough competition this preseason and the team has turned out all the better for it. Difficult losses to three imposing CIS teams (Lakehead Unversity, University of Manitoba and University of Winnipeg), an even bigger challenge against the NAIA's Wayne State Wildcats, and two narrow losses to the Briercrest Clippers appears to have helped shape the Blazers into the top team in their own conference, at least at the moment.

On Wednesday night, CMU added to their conference lead with their sixth straight win by defeating the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen, 85-34. "I think that playing against better teams makes you better," said third-year center Julie Lock, "it gave us more experience and helped all the first-year players bring a higher level of competition into our own league."

CMU started the season with a big home court win over the defending MCAC Champions, Red River Rebels. The Rebels and Blazers have had a long existing rivalry on the basketball court with the Rebels holding the majority of wins in recent history. On their path to six consecutive wins, the Blazers have two of those against the Rebels.

What is showing up in the statistics is balanced scoring which is leading to team cohesion and success on the court. "All our time together has helped the team bonding and has brought everyone closer together, " added Lock, "we trust each other so much now and that shows in the way we are playing."

Wednesday night's win was the fourth in six conference games that has seen five Blazers score in double-digits and a glance at the conference scoring leaders will indicate just how well CMU is sharing the ball, as only three members of the conference's top offensive team are listed in the top ten.

With the first half of the season complete, the road to the Championship doesn't get any easier for the Blazers. CMU picks up the new year with a series of exhibition games in early January at the Pioneer Invitational in Thief River Falls followed by four additional non-conference games dispersed early in the second half of the conference schedule; two at home and a weekend series in Bemidji.
