She's A Keeper! Newest Blazer Expected To Make Big Impact
Women's Soccer is very happy to announce the commitment of former Portage Trails Soccer Club and Manitoba Provincial Goalkeeper Lydia Balsillie who signed a letter of intent to compete for CMU for the 2016 MCAC Season.
Along with her training with St. Charles / Portage Trails and the Provincial Program, Balsillie's technical ability was strengthened at the Jeff Seney Goalkeeping Academy.
"Lydia will make a major impact on our team and on the conference immediately," said co-head coach Lianna Bestvater, "she is a very infuential player that will help our team win a lot of games in the coming years."
A grade 12 student at Westgate Mennonite Collegiate, Balsillie was selected as the Wings team MVP in Grade 9 and Grade 10. She was also a big part of the incredibly successful Portage Trails Girls team who won numerous Winnipeg Youth Soccer Championships in both indoor and outdoor soccer from Balsillie's u-12 and u-15 seasons.
Perhaps her greatest team accomplishment came when the MSA Cup Champion Portage Trails u-15 Girls finished fourth at the Canadian Nationals in Vaughan, Ontario.
A multisport athlete, Balsillie is also a member of the Westgate Wings varsity girls basketball team.
The Women's Futsal team kicks off their 2016 MCAC schedule on January 23rd when they begin their quest for the Copa de la Paz in Brandon against the Brandon Bobcats. The next home action for the Blazers is February 2nd when they host the defending outdoor soccer champion, Red River Rebels on the futsal court.
