Women’s Basketball Duo Listed Among The MCAC’s Best

With only days remaining before the MCAC Championships tip off at Red River College this weekend, the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference have released their 2016 selections for All-Conference Women's Basketball team and it is no surprise to see two Blazers listed in the MCAC elite.

One of the MCAC's best shooters, Sarah Townsend made an immediate impact on the MCAC in her rookie season leading the conference offensively with 13.3 points per game. The product of Winnipeg Wolves and the Linden Christian Wings also finished second in scoring from beyond the 3-point line, scoring an average of 2.42 threes per game.

Accompanying Townsend from CMU is veteran guard Cassie Wiebe, who earned All-Conference recognition for the third time in her three-year career. The Carman Collegiate graduate was again amongst the leaders in a number of statistical categories including 3.25 assists per game and averaging 9.1 points per game, good for 11th in the conference and finishing fifth in steals with 2.67 per game.

Providence's sophomore forward Amber Harms received her first Most Valuable Player selection averaging 10.3 points per game and 9.6 rebounds per game for the 5-7 Pilots.

Two of Harm's Pilot teammates were also listed among the MCAC's best; dynamic wing Courtney Engel and powerful post Isabella Selk. Completing the 2016 Women's Basketball All-Conference selections were Red River's Lindsay Young and Lacey Finnbogosan.

Young had an incredibly strong campaign for the 8-4 Rebels, finishing second in scoring with 13.0 points per game, first in total rebounds with 12.0 per game and was by far the MCAC's most productive player with a productivity average of 20.8 in 8 games; a full 8 points higher than the second-place finisher in that statistical category.

CMU tips off in their women's semifinal on Saturday afternoon at 4 pm at Red River College against the fourth-ranked University of Winnipeg College Wesmen, while the Rebels and Pilots meet in the other women's semi.
