Hayter And Penner Ranked In The MCAC’s Best In Men’s Basketball

On Wednesday, the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference released their 2016 Men's Basketball All-Conference Team as the final four prepare to compete this weekend for the 2016 Conference Championships at Red River College.

It was no surprise to see CMU second-year guard Jon Hayter listed in the MCAC's elite. The 6'0 scoring dynamo from little Pinawa High School averaged 16.9 points per game and was recently named the MCAC's Athlete of the Week for his 19 point, 9 rebound performance in a home win over the Providence Pilots, who will enter Saturday's Men's Semifinal as the #2 ranked team and will match up as CMU's first round opponent.

Hayter also finished 7th in the conference in total rebounds at 7.55 and despite being a perimeter player, ranked 3rd in blocked shots with 0.91 per game. Hayter is a two-time MCAC All-Confererence Selection.

Following close behind his teammate into this year's top team is rookie center Jacob Penner. The 6'8 Garden Valley Collegiate high school star took a few games to get his footing in the MCAC but has been a huge factor in the Blazers improved offensive and defensive game since late November. Penner averaged 14.0 points per game in his first college season and finished 3rd in total rebounds at 8.75 per game.

Missing from this list is graduating captain Adam Bergen who despite suffering a season ending knee injury at the season's halfway point in November, still finished far and away the conference's top rebounder, averaging 12.5 per game and 6 of those coming on the offensive glass and was in the midst of a prominent fourth season in the MCAC.

The Providence Pilots also took home two All-Conference honours in sharpshooter Daniel Dekleva who averaged 12.9 points per game as an MCAC rookie and dynamic point guard Romeo KC who took Most Valuable Player honours.

Fourth year combo guard Taylor Brown was Red River College's lone All-Conference member who had a huge second half to the season, averaging 18.6 points per game and 9.14 total rebounds, while Chris Bartolay of the MCAC's top ranked University of Winnipeg College Wesmen closed out the 2016 selections.

The Rebels and College Wesmen will meet on Saturday afternoon in one of the MCAC's Men's semifinals while the Blazers and Providence Pilots will tip off later on Saturday at 6 pm. All games will be played at Red River College's North Gym at the Notre Dame Campus.
