CMU Backcourt Bolstered By Second All-Star Westwood Guard

Brianna Hayward joins high school teammate Jessica Marx-Houndle as the second member of the Westwood Warriors to commit to the CMU Women's Basketball program for the 2016-17 season. Hayward helped lift the Warriors to the 2016 Manitoba High School 'AAAA' Girls quarterfinals in March and was among the top grade 12 girls selected to play in Basketball Manitoba's recent Graduating All-Star event.

"Brianna is a very welcome addition to our roster," said head coach Joe Di Curzio, "she is a very high character person with tremendous talent on the court."

Hayward averaged 18 points and 14 rebounds per game in her graduating season with Westwood; numbers that will be difficult to repeat as an MCAC rookie but a sure sign that Westwood's 2015 Varsity Girls Basketball Most Valuable Player has multiple tools to offer to the CMU lineup.

"Brianna's basketball skills are terrific and her shooting is fantastic," added Di Curzio, "with her excellent basketball abilities and coming from a very successful high school program, we are expecting her to be a key addition for us."

Selected as a tournament all-star at the Piper Classic, Hayward played her club basketball with the Winnipeg Spartans of the WMBA Rising Stars league. She also actively volunteers with the Mini-Warriors program as a children's basketball instructor and is a certified referee with the Metropolitan Basketball Officials Association.

Brianna and her CMU teammates will begin their 2016-17 preseason at home on September 23rd when they host the Briercrest Clippers of the Alberta Collegiate Athletics Conference in inter-conference play. The Blazers will return to Caronport to play the Clippers on October 6th and continue on to Calgary to play the Ambrose Lions on October 7th as part of a southern Alberta and Saskatchewan tour.
